Difference Between Criminal Code and Denial Code in Nigeria
WHAT IS THE CRIMINAL CODE?
Criminal code,(also known as a penalty code) is a document that contains all the significant content of a particular jurisdiction’s criminal law. The criminal code embodies recognised offences, penalties for these offences, definitions and prohibitions on the prosecution.
Criminal codes in Nigeria are generally applied in civil law jurisdictions and not common law jurisdictions because civil law builds systems around codes, rules and abstract principles and applies them on a real-life case, case-by-case basis. They are not common in common law jurisdictions.
The penalty code is not by itself the criminal law, however, it provides the basis for the criminal law of many countries. The introduction of the criminal code has helped in making the criminal law accessible and understandable to laypeople as well as brought consistency to legal systems.
Well, it turns out that it has not only helped the layman but as well the non-lawyers.
WHAT IS DENIAL CODE?
Denial codes are codes that are used to make amendments to wrongfully used codes and make adjustments if need be. There are three most commonly used denial codes and these are:
- Claim Status Category Codes: In this category, the accepted, rejected, and additional information requested are all indicated and further elaborated in the claim status codes.
- Claim Adjustment Reason Codes: This code only works when there is a need for an adjustment of a claim. This means there is no use of the claim adjustment reason code if there is no adjustment to a claim.
- Remittance Advice Remark Codes: Remittance advice remark codes (RACS) are used to provide additional explanations about remittance processing and the adjustments described by the claim adjustment reason codes.
From the above content, you can clearly see that there are no similarities between a denial code and a criminal code in Nigeria. These codes are applied for different reasons and causes. While criminal code focuses on simplifying criminal law, denial codes majorly deal with addressing payment problems.
