Canada Visa Application in Nigeria – A Guide


Applying for a Canada visa from Nigeria might seem overwhelming and impossible due to the “Japa” syndrome. However, you have nothing to worry about.  In this article, I’ll share tips and information based on my own experience.

Types Of Canada Visa 

Before delving into Canada visa applications in Nigeria, let’s explore the different types of Canada  There are various types of visas for Canada which include: 

  • Student Visa:  A student visa allows you to study in Canada by granting permission to enroll in educational institutions.
  • Work Visa: A work visa permits you to work legally in Canada usually for a specific employer or job. 
  • Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa): A visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa, allows you to visit Canada for tourism, meet family or friends, or attend events.

Each type of visa has specific requirements and conditions for eligibility and duration of stay.

How To Apply For An Online Canada Visa 

If you are applying online through the IRCC online application system,  you need to follow these steps: 

  • Download the document checklist, Visitor Visa (IMM 5257), and Family Information (IMM 5645) forms. 
  • Fill out the application and compile all your support documents. 
  • Complete the VFS consent form. If you are using a third-party provider like VFS Global you will need to submit the consent form along with your application or your application will be rejected. 
  • Pay for the visa. 
  • Submit your application to the local visa application center. Ensure you bring along all your documents that are mentioned in the checklist and your form of payment (cash is recommended). 
  • You can easily pay the service charges and get your receipt with a unique tracking number which can be used to track the progress of the application online. 

Pro Tip:  If you are unable to provide all the supporting documents, then you have to complete the waiver form and then add it to your application. 

How Much is the Visa Fee In Canada 2024?

The cost of Canadian visas in Nigeria 2024 is:

1. Student visa-CAD 150 (NGN 107,250)

2. Student visa with biometric: CAD 235 (NGN 168,025)

3. Visitor visa: CAD 100 (NGN 71,500).

There are two types of fees which are: an application processing fee and a biometric fee.

The Estimation Fees When You Pay Online And Apply Physically

  • The processing fee is ₦28,000 (68 US Dollars.)
  • Biometrics (each person) is ₦24,000 (58 US Dollars.)

The Estimation Fees When Applying For Your VFS Global Visa Application Centre 

  • The processing fee is ₦28,000 (68 US Dollars.)
  • For Biometrics (each person), the fee is about ₦24,000 (58 US Dollars.)
  • The service charge cost of ₦17,000 (41 US Dollars.)

The Requirements For Canada Visa 2024

  • Complete the Student visa, Visitor visa (IMM 5257), and Family Information (IMM 5645) forms. 
  • You will need your original Nigerian passport.  The passport will be valid for at least six months beyond the date of return and have two blank pages. 
  • You will need to submit two passport photographs that meet the photo requirements. 
  • You will need to present your evidence of the application processing fee and biometric fee. 
  • Provide evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of your journey (at least your bank statements for three months, pay slips, proof of investments, etc.)
  • If you are not the one paying for the trip or the person sponsoring your trip you will need to add the documents with a copy of your passport and the financial statement showing they have sufficient funds. 
  • You need to prove ties to Nigeria like an employment letter, proof of business or assets, etc. 
    • Provide your medical history proof of your sound health. 
    • You will need your previous passports showing your travel history. 
    • You will also need to add the documents to support your application like marriage certificates, invitation letters etc. 
    • You will need a self-addressed return courier envelope. 
    • Minors (under 18) traveling alone will have to provide a letter of authorization signed by both parents or legal guardians. For minors that are traveling with one parent, there will be a need for a letter of authorization from the non-accompanying parent or legal guardian.  
    • If you are visiting your family or traveling for business purposes you will need a letter of invitation having details of the nature of your visit, duration of your stay, details of the host person or business, etc. 

    Where To Apply For Canada Visa Application In Nigeria 2024

    You can apply for a Canada Visa online or through a VFS Global Visa Application Centre. 

    Physical

    You can physically apply by visiting the Canadian Embassy in Nigeria, which is located at 4 Anifowoshe Street, Victoria Island Lagos.

    Online

    You can easily apply online when you have access to the scanner to create more copies of your documents and a credit card to pay the processing and biometric fees. Visit the IRCC website to complete your application.

    Courier Service 

    When you have your passport and visa ready for collection, you have the option of collecting them from the Visa Application Centre or having the courier to your chosen address. You will pay the courier after you submit your application.
