Measuring Up With Work Experience as a Fresh Graduate

Getting work experience as a fresh graduate can be difficult. But as a fresh graduate, you already have working experience. Today we do be looking at “How to measure up with Work Experience”

 

As a fresh graduate, you should understand that you already have at least one year of working experience. Especially if you are a Nigerian Graduate, You already have 2 years of working experience. How you present this on your resume is very important.

Here is the list of Experiences you already have as a Fresh Graduate.

 

Internship or Industrial Attachment (SWISS)

During your undergraduate days, you probably had like 6months or one year, depending on the institution. This IT can serve as a working experience. Ensure you add this to your resume and describe clearly your responsibilities during this period. Also, do well to make the employer understand how this IT will help you function well in the new position you are applying for.

Let us not forget, this Industrial attachment is done twice for some institutions. that first 3 months and then 6 months. Then for Polytechnic, it’s a whole year.

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

This is another period you gather working experience. one year of compulsory service for the country is a great period. Graduates are advised to ensure they are gainfully employed in organizations they can learn and gather experience.

With the two above you already have two years of work experience. How you present this on your resume tells a lot. With this number of experience, you can comfortably apply for jobs that require 0 –  2 years of experience.

Jobs such as Graduate Trainees, Internships, and Entry-level Jobs accept this Experience qualification.

Other Means of Getting Job Experience

 

Internship

This is different from the undergraduate internship or Industrial attachment. This is the one you get as a fresh graduate. Most start-ups may need to cut. Then they hire fresh graduates and pay them low. This is actually cool because you do be getting valuable experience. Also, you might be lucky to get the main job after an internship.

 

Volunteer

You can offer your skills at non-government organizations or any other organizations that require volunteer workers. You may not get the pay but the aim is to gain experience. Here you should be able to build up skills and interact with others. Thereby helping you build customer relations experience. You can also get hired through this process.

 

Unlikely Experience

These are experiences you gained that you might not really put into consideration. You might have done some design in college. Tutorials or drama. You might have some jobs during your Extraculliculum activities.

This might love a little, but what it is you did, find a way to add it to your resume. it can add to your experience.

 

Entry-level Jobs

Entry-level jobs are also a sure way of gaining experience. You can also climb the experience ladder from this point. You do get to learn more about work ethics and gain some valuable skills that will help you further. Creating small groups and building network is important.
